I was checking twitter on my phone around 10 a.m. when I saw Weber had been selected as the new coach. Then, I saw the press conference to introduce him was today. I had plans of attending a speech by National Geographic photographer, Joel Sartore, at the Beach Museum on campus at 2 p.m., but I knew I had to be at the press conference. After a quick 30-minutes listening to Mr. Sartore (which was very interesting and something I did not want to leave, but did reluctantly) and rode (yes, rode, as in bicycle) to Bramlage Coliseum. Below are six images from the event.
If you have not heard or would like more information, click here.
A rally was held at 21st and Hillside, near the Wichita State University campus, this afternoon and was embodied by hundreds of protesters. The protest was peaceful, yet strong and united. Passers-by honked in support and some stopped to join the demonstration.
My last Spring Break for my academic career is currently taking place, and I thought Oklahoma City would be a fun destination. Kansas City was another option, but I have been there more than I have been to OKC so the choice was made based on that.
Finding the best local coffee shops is usually at the top of my list of things to do when traveling. OKC had several that I liked, and some that I didn't. Spending time at the Oklahoma City Memorial was also an experience (I visited OKC Memorial shortly after it opened after the bombing, but it is always something to see again).
Leaving my camera and lenses behind in favor of using my iPhone to document the trip was a decision I made because I thought it would be a refreshing, fun experience. And it was. Below are several photos straight out of my iPhone.
This is a fake holiday that, in a nutshell, is a time to consume copious amounts of alcohol. I would describe it as a very, very condensed Mardi Gras-like atmosphere. The actual St. Patrick's Day falls during Spring Break, when a lack of students are around campus, so an annual event was created to take place the week before. People (mostly college students) come from around the state (a lot of KU people) and from out of state. As someone who does not drink alcohol, I found most of the festival goers to be fairly pleasant (at least the ones I encountered). However, some people didn't make it out without an encounter with the local police force (see below). Check out a small selection of photos below and thanks for looking at my blog!
It was also senior day for two players, Jamar Samuels and Victor Ojeleye. As far as the game, it was close in the first half but K-State pulled away in the second half and won fairly easily, 77-58. Next up is the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City this week, and then wait to see what happens on selection Sunday.

I had the opportunity to have a brief portrait session in the studio today with two ladies at Kansas State. I needed to shoot a few portraits for a class and since I am really into tattoo's, I decided I'd try to find some people with some cool ink. I work at the Collegian with Jakki, who has eight total tattoo's at just 18-years-old, and she was nice enough to talk to her friend Maria, who has several cool tattoo's herself, and got her to tag along for the shoot. Below are few photos from the 20-minute portrait session.
The Wildcats lost to Arkansas, 29-16, at Cowboys Stadium in front of a large crowd. It was by far the largest athletic event I have ever covered, and it was a great time, but what stands out the most to me from this trip is when we covered the K-State football team pay a visit to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Perhaps I am being too emotional about it, but the way the kids' eyes lit up and the smiles they had on their faces really struck me. Below are a few images from the past few days.
The scheduled 11:30 a.m. kickoff was delayed until 1:30 due to lightning in the area. The weather was cold, rainy, and, well, "football weather," I suppose. It was also "Senior Day" at Bill Snyder Family Stadium for all graduating (theoretically) players. Now K-State waits until 7:15 p.m. tonight (Sunday) to find out its bowl fate. Below are a few images from today's game.
I was first introduced to this band at Farm Aid in Kansas City earlier this summer. The band is led by singer and exceptional guitarist, Lukas Nelson, son of country music legend, Willie Nelson. I was given access to the band shortly after they arrived in Manhattan, and was able to photograph the band during sound check. I met all four members of the band, and all of them were very nice and down to earth. After the concert, I met up with them again, and shockingly, they remembered my name and thanked me for photographing the band and supporting them. I would have been at this show regardless of photographic access or not, as I am a big fan of the band. They played an electrifying set and left all who attended buzzing afterward.
K-State came into the game ranked 11th in the latest BCS polls, and the Kansas Jayhawks have been struggling. From start to finish, the Wildcats took care of the Jayhawks quite easily. I have been to Lawrence many, many times, but today was my first time inside of Memorial Stadium. I was really surprised by the lack of attendance, and how there were seemingly more K-State fans than KU. The final score was, 59-21, in favor of K-State, and the Wildcats remain undefeated at, 7-0. Next weekend Oklahoma comes to Manhattan for a tough game. (Although, as I write this OU is currently losing late in the 4th quarter)
It was the first show of the 2011 McCain Performance Series. I have covered several shows at this venue, located on K-State's campus, and I really think it is nice place to see performances. This is just a one photo post, but thanks for looking!
I grabbed my camera and tripod and went down to the Keeper of the Plains. At 9 p.m. the giant work of art is surrounded by flames for about 15 minutes. I thought the flames and lightning would produce a fun photograph. Afterward, I went to Old Town and climbed onto a parking garage to get a view of an area filled with restaurants, bars, live music, and a movie theatre. Below are the results.
As I write this, 134 lives have been confirmed as deceased from the tornado. This tornado is the deadliest in the U.S. in more than 60 years. When people ask me what it was like to witness the aftermath, I typically shake my head and remain speechless. For me, it resembles, what I imagine, a violent war zone would look like.
I was surprised to find how many of the survivors were willing to speak to me and other press about their experience. For me, as I am sure it is for the majority of journalist, the goal is to never exploit the people that have been put in these situations, but to tell and show the honest story and emotion that exist.
In 2007, I traveled to Greensburg, KS to photograph the devastation of a tornado that destroyed that town. I have since been back to Greensburg to see the rebuilding process, and how the community is proving that life can continue after such a disastrous event.
I hope that everyone in Joplin, Tuscaloosa, AL, and every other place that has been affected throughout this horrible tornado season will prevail as Greensburg has.
The Manhattan farmer's market is one of the oldest in Kansas. Below is a picture of juggler, Anneliese Spence, performing near the entrance of the market, and a man with his son walking around. I love farmer's markets because they are comprised of local people, producing locally grown food/handmade items.
Below is a video I just finished on a postal carrier, Larry Williams Sr., that delivers in Manhattan. Before his tenure with the U.S. Postal Service, he served 22 years in the military. He is nice guy that really enjoys his job. Take a look!
